1. Chittagong Port (Chattogram Port)

Chittagong Port (port code BDCGP)is the busiest port in Bangladesh. It is on the southeastern side of the country,located on the Karnaphuli River, managed by the Chittagong Port Authority.

On average, the Chittagong Portcan handle more than 3 million TEUs yearly.

The country has invested in technology and infrastructure to ensure seamless cargo handling. Currently, this is the only port that handles about 90% of Bangladesh’s seaborne trade. This includes bulk cargo, containerized goods, and fuel. The port links Bangladesh to major routes for shipping in the Middle East, Asia, and Europe.

2. Mongla Port

Mongla Port is located near the Sundarbans, in Bagerhat District, Khulna Division, southwestern Bangladesh. It is the second-largest port in the country, with port code BDMGL.

Managed by the Mongla Port Authority, the port has been in existence since 1950. No wonder it has an impressive capacity of over 55,000 TEUs each year. Additionally, its bulk cargo volume keeps increasing.

Again, it plays an important role in the Bangladesh maritime trade as Chittagong congestion keeps rising. Its closeness to industries in the western and northern regions makes shipping and logistics easier from those regions to foreign waters.

3. Payra Port (Patuakhali)

Payra Port is the third-largest port in Bangladesh. It is located in Patuakhali District, on the Ramnabad Channel in southern Bangladesh. Its port code is BDPAY.

Although the port in Bangladesh was established in 2013, operations started fully in 2016.

The Payra Port Authority manages the port. In addition, it has been designed to handle deep-draft vessels of up to 12 meters. This means large containers and bulk carriers are welcome.

Although still under development, the port is aimed at cutting down the pressure on Mongla and Chittagong. Again, it is expected to handle a valuable share of imports and exports once development is completed.

4. Dhaka River Port

Dhaka River Port, also known as Pangon Inland Container Terminal (ICT), was established in 2013. Dhaka River Port is located in Keraniganj, mainly on the Buriganga River, in Dhaka. Its port code is BDPAN.

The Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority, or BIWTA, manages the Dhaka River Port with assistance from CPA. Also, it has a capacity of about 116,000 TEUs each year, with plans for expansion ongoing.

Dhaka River Port is a major port that connects Bangladesh to international trade. It is the country’s first inland river container terminal. Due to that, direct container movement from Dhaka to Chittagong Port is achieved easily. This is great, as it saves time and eases congestion on roads.

5. Matarbari Deep Sea Port

Although an emerging international shipping port, Matarbari Deep Sea Port is currently operating partially. The port is located in Maheshkhali Upazila, Cox’s Bazar District, southeastern Bangladesh.

Establishment of this port began in 2020, with 2025 being the year of partial operations to begin. It has been designed to handle deep-sea vessels (of up to 18 m draft) mainly. However, when in full operations mode, it will be a mess to handle up to 3 million TEUs yearly.

Managed by the Chittagong Port Authority with support from JICA, this deep-sea port is expected to make a huge statement in international shipping.
